80/20 Strategic PlanningJustin MechamMost underperformance isn't from doing too little — it's from spending time on the wrong 80% of tasks, so applying the Pareto principle deliberately to planning (identifying and prioritizing the 20% of actions that drive most results) outperforms simply working harder or longer.
AffordancesJames J. GibsonObjects and environments don't just have properties — they signal what can be done with them, and that signal is what actually guides behavior, not conscious analysis of physical properties.
Circadian Rhythm & Sleep HomeostasisNathaniel Kleitman / Satchin PandaTwo processes govern sleep — a 24-hour circadian clock that schedules alertness, and a homeostatic pressure that builds with time awake — and violating either by irregular light, meals, or bedtime impairs cognition the next day more than most people realize.
Conway's LawMelvin ConwayConway observed that the structure of any system you design will be a copy of the communication structure of the organization that built it — so you cannot cleanly separate product architecture from org architecture.
Deep WorkCal NewportThe ability to focus without distraction on cognitively demanding tasks is rare, valuable, and trainable.
Dieter Rams' 10 Principles of Good DesignDieter RamsRams, Braun's chief designer, reduced good design to ten checks — innovative, useful, aesthetic, understandable, unobtrusive, honest, long-lasting, thorough, environmentally friendly, and as little design as possible — and applied them for decades to beat fashion cycles.
Form Follows FunctionLouis SullivanA structure's shape should be dictated by what it needs to do, not by decorative tradition — form is a consequence of function, not a separate choice.
Full Guide: How To Unlock Extreme Focus On CommandDan KoeYou don't need more hours, you need one hour a day pointed at the right thing — and the mechanism for reliable focus is matching challenge to skill (flow), structuring days around building/maintenance/recovery, and deliberately resting, since the brain's Default Mode Network does its best idea-generation work when you stop working.
Gall's LawJohn GallGall's law states that a complex system that works is invariably found to have evolved from a simple system that worked — so starting with a complex spec and hoping it works on day one is the most common path to expensive failure.
Grit: The Power of Passion and PerseveranceAngela DuckworthGrit — sustained passion and perseverance toward long-term goals — predicts achievement across domains (West Point cadets, spelling bee finalists, teachers, salespeople) independent of, and sometimes better than, raw talent, though Duckworth's own later statements scale back the size of the effect from her original framing.
Habit StackingJames ClearThe best way to build a new habit is to attach it to a habit you already do every single day.
Hebbian Theory: Neurons That Fire Together, Wire TogetherDonald HebbLearning is physical — repeated co-activation between neurons strengthens the connection between them, which is how experience becomes structure.
How Julia Child Used First Principles ThinkingRosie / Farnam StreetReal mastery in any domain — cooking included — comes from understanding first principles (why a dish works at the level of chemistry and technique), not from memorizing recipes, since only first-principles understanding lets you troubleshoot, adapt, and improvise when circumstances change.
How To Articulate Yourself IntelligentlyDan KoeSounding articulate isn't spontaneous eloquence, it's having 8-10 refined 'greatest hits' ideas you've thought through hundreds of times, delivered through one of three structures (Micro Story, Pyramid Principle, or Cross-Domain Synthesis) rather than answering questions from a blank slate.
How to Be a Great StorytellerLisa Christen, Forbes Coaches CouncilEffective storytelling follows a consistent structural pattern — relatable characters, compelling conflict, a clear beginning-middle-end arc, and a strong ending — which explains why stories persuade more reliably than raw data even when the data is stronger.
How To Become So Creative It Feels IllegalDan KoeCreativity isn't a talent, it's a state of consciousness that gets buried by conditioning, productivity-worship, and infinite input with zero processing time — and the fix is a structured week of deliberately reducing stimulation, not adding more inspiration.
How to Enjoy the ClassicsSteve AllenClassics feel unreadable because people approach them as assignments to survive rather than books to be read on their own terms — with context, patience, and a willingness to keep going past the slow opening.
How to Improve Your VocabularyTony RandallVocabulary grows fastest not from memorizing word lists but from context first (guessing a word's meaning from how it's used), then verifying with a real dictionary, then tracing the word back to its root.
How to Remember Everything You ReadPolymathinvestorRetention comes from active engagement with material — summarizing in your own words, spacing repetition over time, and connecting new ideas to what you already know — rather than from passive re-reading, which is the most common and least effective study habit.
How to Write ClearlyEdward T. ThompsonClear writing is a product of outlining before you write, knowing exactly how much your reader already knows, and ruthlessly cutting anything that shows off instead of explains.
I'm Begging You To Write More EssaysDan KoeEssays are one of the last forms of content that actually require thinking, and the distinction matters civilizationally: articles package existing knowledge, but essays are an act of thinking that changes the author's (and reader's) beliefs — something AI, by definition, cannot originate.
If You Have Multiple Interests, Do Not Waste The Next 2-3 YearsDan KoeMultiple interests aren't a lack of focus, they're the raw material for a durable competitive edge — a perspective only you have — but they need a 'vessel' (a brand built around your own development) to turn into income, or they stay tutorial-hell hobbies.
Imitate, Then InnovateDavid PerellThe fastest route to an original voice runs through deliberate imitation. Creators who make originality their highest virtue — Perell's 'Originality Disease' — produce less and sound like everyone else; those who copy their heroes and fail to match them end up unique.
Interstitial JournalingAnne-Laure Le CunffLogging a few sentences at the exact transition point between tasks — what you just did, how you feel, what's next — reduces cognitive load and counters procrastination more effectively than either rigid daily planning or end-of-day review, because it intervenes precisely at the moment attention is most likely to drift.
Jobs-to-Be-DoneClayton Christensen / Bob MoestaChristensen argues customers don't buy products, they hire them to make progress in a specific struggling moment — so segmentation by job, not by persona, predicts when a product will actually be pulled into use.
Learn This Skill If You Want To Thrive In The Next 10 YearsDan KoeWriting is the foundational skill of the internet economy — not because it's more valuable in isolation, but because every other medium of online distribution, tweets, threads, video scripts, ads, newsletters, is, underneath, a written artifact first.
Make a PACT, Not a SMART GoalAnne-Laure Le CunffSMART goals fixate on an outcome you do not control. Le Cunff's alternative, the PACT — Purposeful, Actionable, Continuous, Trackable — commits you to a repeatable output for a set period, turns the result into data, and is the unit of what she later called tiny experiments.
MAYA: Most Advanced Yet AcceptableRaymond LoewyLoewy argued successful designs sit at the tension between novelty and familiarity — the most advanced solution the audience can still accept as familiar enough to adopt — so pushing too far ahead of what feels acceptable kills adoption even if the design is objectively superior.
Mindset: The New Psychology of SuccessCarol DweckPeople who hold a 'growth mindset' — believing ability can be developed through effort — tend to achieve more and handle setbacks better than those with a 'fixed mindset,' though later large-scale replications found the effect considerably smaller and more context-dependent than the book implies.
Negative CapabilityJohn KeatsTrue creative genius requires the ability to comfortably exist in a state of uncertainty, mystery, and doubt without irritably reaching for facts and reason.
Networked Note-TakingAnne-Laure Le CunffThe brain doesn't work in rigid, hierarchical folders; it works through associative links. Your note-taking system should do the same.
Nicomachean EthicsAristotleThe right way to live isn't defined by following rules or calculating outcomes, but by cultivating virtues — stable character traits, each a mean between two vices of excess and deficiency — through repeated practice, until acting well becomes second nature.
Pixar's 22 Rules of StorytellingEmma CoatsCoats distilled Pixar's internal story rules — lead with the character's want, make stakes clear, prefer a flawed protagonist who earns transformation — and they work because they align narrative structure with how audiences simulate intention.
Put the Pressure on YourselfThomas Edison (quoted); compiled excerptExternal motivation rarely arrives on schedule, so the people who actually reach their potential are the roughly 2% who can work without supervision — putting pressure on themselves rather than waiting for someone else to demand it of them.
Read What You Love Until You Love to ReadNaval RavikantThe way to become a lifelong reader — Naval's primary form of self-education — is to read only what genuinely interests you until reading itself becomes a pleasure, rather than forcing a prescribed curriculum.
Seven Stoic Principles to Simplify LifeMarcus FrickA working Stoic practice compresses to seven paired principle-and-action-item combinations — from 'less is more' to 'you're not in control' — that translate 2,000-year-old maxims into weekly calendar audits and journaling habits.
Sit-on-Your-Ass InvestingCharlie MungerOutstanding investment returns are generated not through hyperactive trading, but by cultivating the extreme patience required to hold exceptional compounding machines for decades.
TastePaul GrahamGood taste isn't subjective. It's the accumulated recognition of what actually works.
The $1 Million Dollar Skill Stack (Learn In This Order)Dan KoeRather than chasing single 'marketable skills' — web design, ads, funnels — sustainable income comes from stacking three layers in sequence: a valuable message, a medium to distribute it, and results-oriented technical skills, because each layer is close to worthless without the others.
The Art of FocusDan KoeIn an attention economy engineered to fragment focus, the ability to sustain deep, deliberate attention on a self-chosen goal is the scarce skill that separates people who reinvent their circumstances from people who stay reactive to them — and focus is trainable, not fixed.
The Art Of Self-Architecture (How To Change Who You Are)Dan KoeMost people fail to change because they try to change their actions while leaving their underlying identity — their 'character,' the operating system of beliefs and self-concept built up since childhood — untouched; real change requires deliberately reconstructing that identity, not just adding new habits on top of it.
The Bus Ticket Theory of GeniusPaul GrahamGreat work is often produced by people obsessed with a topic in a way that looks useless to outsiders.
The Default Mode NetworkMarcus RaichleThe brain doesn't go idle at rest — a specific network becomes more active the moment you stop focusing on a task, and it burns a disproportionate share of the brain's total energy doing it.
The Design of Everyday Things & SignifiersDon NormanNorman showed everyday errors are usually not user stupidity but design failures — objects must signal how to use them via signifiers, constraints, and feedback, not via labels and manuals.
The Eisenhower MatrixAttributed to Dwight D. EisenhowerTasks fall into four categories along two independent axes — urgent versus not urgent, important versus not important — and most people's schedules are dominated by the urgent-but-unimportant quadrant, which crowds out the important-but-not-urgent work that actually compounds.
The Feynman Technique and the Leitner SystemJosh Sanders (compiling Feynman and Leitner)Genuine understanding is tested by whether you can explain a concept simply enough for a child, and genuine retention is engineered by spacing review intervals according to how well you already know the material — two separate mechanisms that most study habits conflate into one vague 'studying' activity.
The Feynman Technique: The Ultimate Guide to Learning Anything FasterFarnam Street (Shane Parrish), after Richard FeynmanYou don't actually understand something until you can explain it in plain language a 12-year-old could follow — complexity and jargon are usually masking a gap in your own understanding, not evidence of sophistication.
The Generation EffectAnne-Laure Le CunffYou remember information significantly better if you actively generate it from your own mind rather than passively reading it.
The Instant Gratification MonkeyTim UrbanProcrastination is a battle between the Rational Decision Maker and the Instant Gratification Monkey, mediated only by the Panic Monster.
The Most Profitable Skill Of The 21st Century (Not AI)Dan KoeThe one skill that never goes out of style is understanding human nature, because the mind is a story engine driven by three pressure points — survival, identity, and progress — and pulling those levers is the core mechanism behind marketing, writing, and influence.
The One-Person Business Model (How To Productize Yourself)Dan KoeFor most people starting out, a one-person business built around personal experience, skills, and interests, distributed through social media and no-code tools, is a more viable path to self-reliance than either traditional employment or a venture-scale startup, because it removes the capital and team requirements that used to gate entrepreneurship.
The Shallows: How the Internet Changes the BrainNicholas CarrCarr argues the internet, as a medium, rewires cognition toward scanning and against sustained deep reading — not because we choose distraction, but because the tool's form trains the brain that expects rapid reward.
The Six Triggers Behind BurnoutRian DorisBurnout has six distinct psychological triggers — lack of control, values conflict, insufficient reward, work overload, unfairness, and breakdown of community — and taking time off only addresses one of them, which is why rest alone often fails to fix it.
The Ultimate Guide to Writing OnlineDavid PerellWriting online works as a compounding, non-scarce asset and a serendipity engine — shifting from 'Writing from Scarcity' (staring at a blank page) to 'Writing from Abundance' (systematically capturing raw material before you need it) is what separates writers who publish consistently from those who don't, and consistent publishing eventually creates a 'Personal Monopoly,' a unique intersection of knowledge and voice that attracts aligned opportunities without competing for attention.
The Unix PhilosophyKen Thompson, Dennis Ritchie & Doug McIlroyUnix won not by features but by composition — small tools that do one thing well, speak in text streams, and compose via pipes, so new capabilities emerge from combining old parts rather than rewriting.
The Wheel of FocusSuren SamarchyanConcentration is not a single skill you either have or lack — it is the output of four separate systems (mindset, energy, environment, technique) that all have to be tuned at once.
The Zeigarnik EffectBluma ZeigarnikThe human brain remembers uncompleted or interrupted tasks significantly better than completed ones, causing lingering anxiety until the loop is closed.
Turning Pro: The Difference Between Amateurs and ProfessionalsFarnam Street (Shane Parrish)Consistent outperformance comes down to a mindset shift, not raw talent: amateurs have a goal, professionals have a system; amateurs are reactive, professionals are proactive; amateurs focus on being right, professionals focus on the best outcome.
